Inspiration
Deborah Husak

I think my inspiration to become a science teacher came from the different teaching experiences I had over many years. I have always enjoyed sharing ideas and knowledge with different age groups from preschoolers to adults. I also have always found the sciences to be amazing and want to share that sense of wonder with others.

I had enjoyed working as a camp counselor and Sunday school teacher in high school and college. I think that those experiences led me to start my teacher certification as an undergraduate in biology. I took a different path when I was accepted to medical school but found myself focusing on patient education. I think my strongest attribute as a physician was my ability to communicate difficult concepts to my patients. I found myself creating, ordering and evaluating lots of medical educational materials.

I took a hiatus from medicine when my children were born and rediscovered the joy I found in helping in the classroom as a volunteer, substitute teacher, and even a few months as a full time elementary science teacher. I really loved being a science teacher but my commitments as a Coast Guard wife and mother meant that I could only do it for a few months. Now that my husband has retired so we are not moving every 2-3 years, and my children are older, I can get the credentials I need to return to teaching. I had thought I wanted to teach elementary students but my EDC 250 experience through URI at Mount Pleasant High School convinced me that I would really enjoy working with high school students.
